چکیده

The ion saturation current to a spherical probe in the entire range of ion magnetization is computed with SCEPTIC3D, new three-dimensional version of the kinetic code SCEPTIC designed to study transverse plasma flows. Results are compared with prior two-dimensional calculations valid in the magnetic-free regime [I.H. Hutchinson, PPCF 44:1953 (2002)], and with recent semi-analytic solutions to the strongly magnetized transverse Mach probe problem [L. Patacchini and I.H. Hutchinson, PRE 80:036403 (2009)]. At intermediate magnetization (ion Larmor radius close to the probe radius) the plasma density profiles show a complex threedimensional structure that SCEPTIC3D can fully resolve, and contrary to intuition the ion current peaks provided the ion temperature is low enough. Our results are conveniently condensed in a single factor Mc, function of ion temperature and magnetic field only, providing the theoretical calibration for a transverse Mach probe with four electrodes placed at 45o to the magnetic field in a plane of flow and magnetic field.

Momentum Transport in Electron-Dominated Spherical Torus Plasmas

The National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) operates between 0.35 and 0.55 T, which, when coupled to up to 7 MW of neutral beam injection, leads to central rotation velocities in excess of 300 km/s and ExB shearing rates up to 1 MHz. This level of ExB shear can be up to a factor of five greater than typical linear growth rates of long-wavelength ion (e.g., ITG) modes, at least partially supp...

Parametric Decay Instability During High Harmonic Fast Wave Heating Experiments on the TST-2 Spherical Tokamak

A degradation of heating efficiency was observed during high-harmonic fast wave (HHFW) heating of spherical tokamak plasmas when parametric decay instability (PDI) occurred. Suppression of PDI is necessary to make HHFW a reliable heating and current drive tool in high β plasmas. In order to understand PDI, measurements were made using a radially movable electrostatic probe (ion saturation curre...

Kinetic Effects in the Pedestal of a Tokamak

We consider the effects of finite ExB on the residual and neoclassical ion heat transport and ion flow in the pedestal. For a tokamak pedestal with a density scale of the poloidal ion gyroradius the finite ExB drift modfies the ion orbits, moving the trapped-passing boundary towards the tail of the ion distribution function. Introduction In many tokamak plasmas the width of the pedestal is obse...

Plume Study of a 1.35 Kw Spt-100 Using an Exb Probe

The ion energy distribution of each ion species in the SPT-100 plume was obtained at various angles off thruster axis at 1 m and 50 cm from the thruster exit using an ExB probe. Each peak of the measured ExB probe traces were fitted using a model based on the kinetic theory of gases, and the energy distribution functions f(Ei) were obtained. From the fitting parameters, Eb (the beam energy) and...
